How to make a DIY flower crown
Since last summer, I have been swooning over flower crowns. There’s something so girly about them, that transforms an ordinary day into an event. They are fab for weddings, festivals or even your next photo shoot. After photographing Rachel and Rosie in gorgeous flower crowns last year, I bought a couple of not too inspiring ones in the local market. I decided to take matters into my own hands and have a little play at making a DIY flower crown for some upcoming photo sessions this spring. I thought you would enjoy seeing the process, and hopefully also have a go at making these yourself.
You will need:
Floral wire / Floral tape / Floral wire cutters
And of course flowers (real or faux, you take your pick!). I used some really gorgeous artificial flowers (which look pretty darn real) as I am going to be using them over the next few weeks.
1. Take a piece of floral wire and form it into a circular shape. Measure how long you will need the wire to be to form a loose crown around your head. I’ve decided to put little loops at each end of my crown so the sizing can be adjusted easily. Cut off any excess wire and wrap the tape around the wire edges like I am in the image below. You could also tape the circle shut if you are happy with the exact size.
2. It’s time to add your flowers to your crown. To attach each flower to the crown, make sure the flower stems are at least 3 inches long (you can cut off excess stems with scissors or wire cutters), and, using floral tape, tape the stem to the crown . You’ll want to wrap the tape around the stem about 4 times to sure sure your blooms stay put.
3. Add flowers to as much or as little of the rest of the crown as you’d like. For the crown which I made, I used a mix of different types and of flowers to give soft and interesting texture. You could also add foliage to your crown if you like, though I would suggest doing this just before you add your flowers using the same method above.
4. Wear with a big ol’ smile and enjoy!
Ps. A big thank you to Mike for helping me with taking photos (he wasn’t keen to model in this instance).
Pps. I would love to see your flower crowns which you have made using this tutorial, so please do tag me on Facebook or Instagram to show them off.
[…] 5. Flower crowns. For those of you that follow me on Instagram, you will already know that flower crowns are my current spring obsession. […] The artificial flowers were from the dress up store So High Soho and the real flowers were from the market florist Leanne in Berwick Street. If you would like to see how to make a DIY flower crown too, I have put a little tutorial together for you here. […]
